Val Garland and Elizabethan Portraiture

This is a still from Lady Gaga's music video for 'Judas' in which the legendary Val Garland has created her make-up look. I love this make-up creation by Garland, and it really reminds me of the Elizabethan era, with the dress that Gaga is wearing, and touches such as the heavily embroidered nails, the rouge lips, pale skin, and the curled hair. The nails are adorned in materials and beading, much like the richly decorated dresses that Queen Elizabeth would have worn to show her wealth and high status and class. The Elizabethan's were also fans of rouged lips, and here Gaga is wearing a dark red on her lips, darker than the Elizabethan's would have worn on their lips. She also has curls in her hair which was a popular style amongst the Elizabethan's, however they preferred to model a tight curl, and here Gaga has a more modern looser curl. The eye make-up here is very different to something that women in the Elizabethan era would have worn, but it still reminds me of the era, as it is in a slight pattern with the wave in the lines and the circle on the inner corners of the eyes, and the Elizabethan's were all about richly decorated patterns on clothing, which Garland has transferred onto Gaga's face here for a more modern interpretation of a classic era.
